Letter to the Mayor

Dear Mayor of Toronto;

CntowerfalltimeI’ve lived in Toronto for well over 20 years now, and I’ve seen many changes in its downtown districts. In my neighborhood, I’ve seen the ever-changing Queen Street West retailing stores, from low end discount computer stores to the high fashion retailers that we see today. I’ve also noticed the ever-increasing number of condos going up daily to re-vitalize the residential living in the downtown core. These are all positive signs in the development of our great city. However, to bring Toronto to a world class living city, we need to address various issues from attracting more tourism businesses in our prime and precious lakefront area, to cleaning up our communities, to reducing the ever increasing traffic congestion in the city’s roads and major highways.

Unlike overpopulated cities, such as Hong Kong, where they had to create shoreline land mass for development, we should take advantage of our natural Lake Ontario shoreline and maximize its potential. Although, there are some existing attractions already in place, we simply have not tapped into its full potential yet. In Chicago, they have taken advantage of their water front properties and populated its entire area with various tourism attractions, such as museums, parks, shops, great seafood restaurants and water theme park activities. In addition, they have built a large sea-world type attraction where everyone can go to see and learn all things about sea living creatures. There are no shortages of successful ideas and stories for lakefront development in many great cities in the world, and Toronto needs to get onboard and create its own unique lakefront environment and activities for us to enjoy and the world to come to.

With the added growth of residential properties in the downtown area, extra attention is needed to further handle the already congested streets in Toronto. The sea of tail lights on the highway going in and out of Toronto is a continuing problem that the city needs to address. A possible solution is to establish a dedicated highway speed lane for taxi and car pooling vehicles, so people would car pool more often to decrease the volume of single drivers on the road these days, which averaged about 80 percent in the latest poll. With the increasing cost of gasoline, air pollution, parking lots and congestion in our local street, the city should encourage the use of scooter/motorcycle to help solve all the problems mentioned.

Another important aspect of what makes a great city is its communities, and Toronto has a large palette of multicultural inhabitants to create a great canvas for everyone to live in. However, dirty neighborhoods do not spell world class living and there needs to be awareness, control and enforcement put in place in the communities to clean up the appearance of Toronto. Chinatown is one of the worst cases that I’ve seen where garbage disposals and vendors taking up sidewalk space is getting out of hand. The smells in the area are un-bearable during summer months with overflow public garbage bins and litter. Pass 9pm, Chinatown becomes a dump site with mountains of produce waste. Some call it “The Great Wall of China”, and it is left on the sidewalk for hours for private garbage pickup from many of the supermarket retailers in the area. It’s not a pleasant area to see or be in at all after business hours.

In addition to cleaning up the city streets of its garbage, we need to find a solution to the squeegee kids on street corners (a constant hazard to the flow of traffic) and the homeless individuals who sleep on the ventilation ducts in the downtown business district. They are a visual reminder to both the local and tourist alike that Toronto, as great as it may be, can’t deal with poverty and it is a critical issue that needs to be deal with in general.

With the economy getting back on its feet and the unfortunate SARS incidents 2 years ago behind us, the city of Toronto needs to prove to the world that it’s not only a great city to live and work in but it is a world class city to visit and to be in.  Immediate action is needed to bring us there, and there is not time to waste.

Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith

Starwarsepisodeiii_releaseposterThe final chapter of George Lucas's Star Wars trilogy is almost here in the theatre. From what I've heard, this time around, the story is alot darker where it's not suitable for young children to see. Finally, George heard our desperate cries and made a movie worthy for mature viewers. I liked the first two movie, despite many negative reviews, and I have great hope for this one.

DarthvaderDarth Vader is one of the classic villain that everybody knows, and we get to see his birth in this final chapter. Someone in our office already walked around wearing the Darth Vader's mask; it looked very cool with the heavy breathing sound effect. With the potential success of the movie this time around, I imagine Darth Vader would be one of the most popular costume for this year's Halloween. So, don't be surprise when you see a whole slew of Vaders in all shapes and sizes running around trick-o-threating on the streets during Halloween. Now, that's funny.

I'll be seeing the movie over this long weekend for sure. Will report back as soon as I can. Until then...

Bang & Olufsen Earphones

BangolufsenearphonesBang & Olufsen products have been know for its style on form and "Wow" factor. D. Lougheed, a friend of mine, recently got the latest B&O earphones, and I was lucky enough to give this baby a try. Is it worth the 250CAD dollars that I would pay at the Bay Bloor Audio store in Toronto? Is the form and function equally weighted in this product?

When you look at any thing made by B&O, one can't help but look at it as a piece of industrial art. The earphone looks and feels very elegant yet not fragile. It's made to impress from its form and you'll sure to attract stares from people on the street. With its high price tag, it will keep it from being too common and will remain at its high priced prestige level.

The metal construction of the earpiece should last you a life time versus the typical plastic build earphones. Though, the only concern I have with it, as with any earphone out there, is the eventual problem with the wire getting loosed or damaged. This wouldn't be a product one would carelessly put in any bag or pocket with the wire all tangled up, and luckily B&O was kind enough to include a hard leather pouch with the earphones for storage.

So what do I think of the ten minutes test time with the earphones? I tested it playing with Celine Dion type of verbal mid range music as well as classical music and I'm happy to say it sounded very good. Impressive in fact on its output in the mid to high frequency ranges. I also used my Paul Van Dyke music to test its ability to handle the low heavy based sound. Though it didn't rock the house down producing rich base output like the Koss headphone (this one is function over form) that I have, it was acceptable. At least I didn't hear any crackling and hissing when I turn the volume way up with this earphone.

I would recommend this product if you have the extra money to pamper yourself, but if your budget is tight, there are cheaper alternatives. However, nothing beats Bang & Olufsen on its design and form in their products, and this particular earphone functions quite admirably. I heard the earphone was showcased in the "Minority Report" movie. That's pretty cool...

Cheers,
Wuju nonono!

Japan Aichi Expo 2005

I've been thinking about going to Japan for the longest time and this may be the year considering there is the Expo 2005 happening right now at Aichi Japan. There are so many things to see and do there from what I saw in the CTV morning news.

You can go to their official website here. The theme of the Expos is all about the environment and technology (my favourite) around us. Off course, there wouldn't be a big event in Japan without the official show mascots. The Expo Aichi mascots are Kiccoro, the Forest Child and Morizo, the Forest Grand Father.

Alot of the pavilions are run by various car manufacturers and electronic giants in Japan. Toyota pavilion show includes highlights such as; the human like musical robots that play trumpets and drums all by themselves on the stage, to the i-unit one man next generation vehicle of the future with cool blue neon lights everywhere that one can imagine in science fiction films. Then there is the virtual forest - Nature Contact from Hitachi Group's pavilion that sounded very interesting,  however the lineups for the show can be as long as 6 hours during the day.

Aside from standing in lines potentially half the time in the Expo, I would also have to use up my Aeroplan and Hilton points I collected over the years travelling aboard from my global consulting work life. I always wished my previous employer had a client in Japan so I might have gotten a free trip working there but that's behind me now.

So I'm back to where I started of wanting to go to Japan but I guess the time isn't here yet. However, there's still a slim hope that I'll be in Japan this year if I win the CTV's "Send Me to Japan" contest for the Expo. Crossing my fingers and hope for the best. :)

Goodnight,

Another Sunless Day

Stormcloud_2Spring came about a month ago and though we had about a week worth of warm low 20 degree celsius temperature in between, it is still very cold during the day and night. Today is yet another day of overcast sky in Toronto, a bit of drizzle rain here and there and the sun is nowhere to be seen. Sad and depressing really.

I guess one expects this during Spring but we all would love to see the sun right about now. This weather also reminds of the time I was in England on one of my business trip there and how I would run to the window for a glimpse of the sun when it decided to come out. How I missed the sun now...

A little poem not written by me but a joy to read. :)

I'm just a little black rain cloud
      Hovering under the honey tree
I'm only a little black rain cloud
Pay no attention to little me
Ev'ryone knows that a rain cloud
Never eats honey, no, not a nip
I'm just floating around over the ground
      Wondering where I will drip
